TDMRC USK Trains Staff and Researchers with Fire Simulation Using Extinguishers

Banda Aceh, September 25, 2025 – The Tsunami and Disaster Mitigation Research Center (TDMRC), Universitas Syiah Kuala (USK), conducted a Fire Extinguisher (APAR) Training at the TDMRC office.

The training was attended by TDMRC staff and researchers, aiming to enhance preparedness and basic skills in handling potential fire incidents in the workplace. The session was led by professional firefighters, allowing participants to gain practical knowledge on how to properly and effectively use a fire extinguisher.

A professional firefighter is explaining instructions on how to use a fire extinguisher (APAR).

The professional firefighter led the session, introducing the different types of fire extinguishers, such as:

  • Water-based extinguishers,

  • Foam extinguishers,

  • Dry powder extinguishers,

  • Carbon dioxide (CO₂) extinguishers, and

  • Wet chemical extinguishers.

The firefighter also explained the common types of fire incidents, including:

  • Fires caused by solid materials such as wood, paper, and fabric,

  • Fires from flammable liquids like fuel or paint,

  • Fires triggered by leaking gas,

  • Fires involving electrical equipment, and

  • Fires from cooking oil or fat in the kitchen.

Participants showed great enthusiasm throughout the sessions, from the technical explanations to the hands-on practice with the fire extinguishers. Through this activity, it is expected that all TDMRC staff and researchers will be better prepared to anticipate and respond to fire incidents at an early stage. TDMRC USK remains committed to continuously providing capacity-building and training activities to foster a safe, productive, and disaster-resilient working environment.
