USK CONDUCTED FIELD SURVEY FOR FLOOD HAZARD SCENARIOS DEVELOPMENT IN PONTIANAK, WEST KALIMANTAN

Pontianak, West Kalimantan – August 21, 2024, the Civil Engineering Department of the Faculty of Engineering at Universitas Syiah Kuala (USK) conducted a field survey for the development of flood hazard scenarios for Pontianak City, West Kalimantan. This survey is a follow-up activity from the Kick-Off Meeting held on July 23, 2024, and part of FINCAPES Project initiatives.

The field survey began with a pre-survey preparation meeting held at the A. Muis Amin Hall of BAPPEDA Pontianak, involving various cross-sectoral agencies. These included BAPPEDA Pontianak, BPS Pontianak, the Pontianak City Public Works and Spatial Planning Office (PUPR), the Environmental Office (DLH), the Regional Disaster Management Agency of Pontianak (BPBD), and local NGOs. The purpose of this meeting was to actively engage local agencies in providing the necessary data for developing flood hazard scenarios in Pontianak City.

The team proceeded with a field survey to identify gaps and challenges faced by the community. The survey was conducted by three distinct teams. The first team navigated the Kapuas River to collect cross-sectional data, current velocity, and sediment using the Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) M9 River Surveyor. The second team inspected drainage systems in Pontianak City to assess their condition and measure tidal levels under both normal conditions and those influenced by rainfall. The third team carried out a vulnerability assessment, engaging directly with communities to evaluate their resilience to the frequent floods in their area.

This field survey was directly led by Dr. (CN) Dedy Alfian, ST., M.Sc., who serves as the project coordinator for the flood hazard scenario development project and is also a researcher in the Disaster Risk Management (DRM) cluster at TDMRC-USK. The survey also involved lecturers from USK’s Civil Engineering Department, as well as researchers and staff from TDMRC, including Fitri Zaitun Nurnalisa, ST., MT., Nazriatun Nisa, S.Si., M.Si., Annisa Sri Sugiarti, S.Si., M.Si., Veri Yanti, ST., MT., Ikramullah Zein, ST., M.Sc., Serli Anda Puteri, ST., and Muhammad Firman, ST.

The field survey concluded with a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) held at the Rohanna Muthalib Hall of the Pontianak City BAPPEDA office, attended by community representatives from various sub-districts and villages in Pontianak City.

The Development of Flood Hazard Scenarios for Pontianak City, West Kalimantan, is led by Prof. Dr. Ir. Ella Meilianda, ST., MT., who serves as the Secretary of the Civil Engineering Department and the Head of the DRM-TDMRC Cluster at USK.

FINCAPES Project is funded by the Government of Canada and implemented by the University of Waterloo, Canada, since 2023. Over the next five years, the FINCAPES Project aims to support the Indonesian government in adapting to and mitigating flood risks caused by climate change, strengthening the climate finance policy framework, and promoting Indonesia’s ecosystem sustainability efforts through nature-based solutions, employing a collaborative and responsive approach.
