Banda Aceh, Indonesia – TDMRC Universitas Syiah Kuala (USK) has organized a guest lecture entitled “Coastal Protection Technology in Japan and Opportunities to Study at Toyohashi University of Technology”, delivered by Prof. Shigeru Kato from Toyohashi University of Technology, Japan and moderated by Tursina, S.T., M.T., a lecturer from Politeknik Negeri Lhoksumawe. The event was opened by the Vice Chancellor I for Academic Affairs, Prof. Dr. Ir. Agussabti, M.Si., IPU. He highlighted the importance of this guest lecture, saying, “This session not only enriches our understanding but also opens new avenues for our students and researchers in terms of further studies and collaborative research opportunities. The guest lecture emphasized the importance of applying scientific knowledge to address the challenges faced by an archipelago like Indonesia. The event also marks an important step in strengthening the partnership between USK and Toyohashi University, encouraging academic exchanges, technology development, and collaborative research in the future.”
Prof. Kato’s presentation highlighted the complex strategies implemented in Japan to combat coastal erosion, effectively manage sediments, and prepare for the impacts of climate change. His insights into the integration of hard structures such as dikes and breakwaters with soft measures such as beach nourishment and sediment management provided valuable lessons for disaster-prone regions such as Indonesia. The seminar also discussed Japan’s response to the challenges posed by global warming, including rising sea levels and increasing storm intensity, which are critical issues for island nations.
Prof. Kato emphasized the importance of resilience in coastal structures, which are able to withstand even the most severe natural disasters without suffering total destruction. In his presentation, Prof. Kato also introduced the academic environment and opportunities at Toyohashi University of Technology. Founded in 1976, TUT is located in Aichi Prefecture, Japan, and is renowned for its research and educational prowess in technological sciences, especially in areas such as mechanical engineering, electrical and electronic information engineering, and architecture and civil engineering. The university maintains a strong relationship with KOSEN colleges, making significant contributions to the development of practical, creative, and outstanding engineers and researchers.
