Focus Group Discussion (FGD) about draft the Kajian Risiko Bencana (KRB) Documents for Nagan Raya
Nagan Raya – The Tsunami and Disaster Mitigation Research Center (TDMRC) of Universitas Syiah Kuala (USK) played an active role in the Focus Group Discussion (FGD) II for the Draft Disaster Risk Assessment Document (KRB) of Nagan Raya Regency for the year 2024. The two-day event, held on December 12–13, 2024 at the Bappeda Hall, Suka Makmue Government Complex, was officially opened by Amran Yunus, S.P., M.T., Assistant for Economic and Development Affairs, representing the Acting Regent of Nagan Raya, Dr. Iskandar AP.
The FGD, organized by the Regional Development Planning Agency (Bappeda) of Nagan Raya, marked a critical step in finalizing the disaster risk assessment document to support the regency’s preparedness and mitigation strategies.
In his address, Amran Yunus emphasized the importance of identifying and mitigating disaster risks given Nagan Raya’s geographical vulnerabilities. Located along the Sumatran Fault Zone, the regency comprises coastal lowlands, hills, and mountains, making it prone to various natural hazards, including floods, landslides, flash floods, tsunamis, extreme weather, wildfires, drought, and earthquakes.
TDMRC, led by Prof. Dr. Syamsidik, ST., M.Sc., contributed key insights during the event by presenting methodologies and results of disaster risk assessments tailored to the specific challenges faced by Nagan Raya. Prof. Syamsidik underscored the importance of data-driven approaches to disaster mitigation and the role of scientific research in supporting government efforts to minimize disaster impacts.
“TDMRC has been committed to providing technical support and evidence-based solutions to help local governments identify vulnerabilities and implement effective mitigation strategies. Through this FGD, we aim to collaborate further in strengthening disaster risk reduction initiatives in Nagan Raya,” stated Prof. Syamsidik.
The discussion included detailed presentations on physical and socio-economic risk mapping, scenario modeling, and mitigation planning. TDMRC also addressed the potential for integrating innovative technologies and community-based disaster risk management to enhance preparedness at all levels.
In his presentation, Rahmattullah, S.STP., M.Si., Head of Bappeda Nagan Raya, highlighted the overarching goals of the disaster risk assessment document, which include:
- Government Planning: Providing a foundation for disaster risk reduction policies and programs.
- Collaborative Efforts: Supporting technical interventions and community action by government partners.
- Community Preparedness: Facilitating practical preparedness actions such as evacuation route planning and decision-making for residential safety.
The session concluded with a lively discussion, where TDMRC addressed questions from participants and emphasized the importance of collaborative, multisectoral approaches to disaster mitigation. The inputs from stakeholders during the FGD will strengthen the final Disaster Risk Assessment Document, ensuring that mitigation plans are comprehensive, integrated, and actionable.
