Banda Aceh, August 14, 2024 – The Tsunami and Disaster Mitigation Research Center (TDMRC) at Universitas Syiah Kuala proudly presents the 32nd installment of its seminar series, titled “Tsunami Heritage: Learning from Various Perspectives.” This event, marking the 20th anniversary of the devastating 2004 Aceh Tsunami, will be held in a hybrid format, both at the TDMRC USK Auditorium and accessible via Zoom.
The seminar aims to delve into the multifaceted impacts of the tsunami through insights from distinguished speakers, including Isaac Kerlow of Art Science Media in Los Angeles, Arjen Kok, retired from the Cultural Heritage Agency of The Netherlands, both joining virtually. Local perspectives will be provided by Nurul Latifa from the Aceh Tsunami Museum and Mr. Yarmen Dinamika, a noted author and journalist from Serambi Indonesia. These experts will explore the social, economic, environmental, religious, and psychological aftermaths of the disaster.
Approximately 40 participants representing a wide array of organizations will attend. This includes members from the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) from various districts in Aceh, the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) of Aceh and Banda Aceh, numerous public and private universities across Aceh, the Forum for Disaster Risk Reduction (F-PRB) of Aceh, Banda Aceh, and Aceh Besar, the Aceh Branch of WALHI (Indonesian Forum for Environment), and the Higher Institute for Environmental and Disaster Studies at Universitas Syiah Kuala (HIBEUNA USK), along with other local NGOs and cultural agencies.
The seminar will commence with opening remarks by Prof. Samsidik S.T., M.Sc., head of TDMRC USK, and will be moderated by Nurmalahayati, a lecturer and researcher from UIN Ar-Raniry, along with Sylvia Agustina from the Department of Architecture and Planning at TDMRC USK.
We also invited scholars, researchers, policymakers, and the general public interested in disaster mitigation and recovery to join us for this enriching and reflective discussion.
