Banda Aceh – TDMRC (Tsunami and Disaster Mitigation Research Center) USK (Syiah Kuala University) held a University Lecture Tour (ULT) on “Tsunami and Biodiversity” on the 3rd Floor Auditorium TDMRC USK on Friday, May 24, 2024. This activity provides knowledge about Tsunami and how Tsunami affects biodiversity from 5 experts in their fields, namely Prof. Muksin Umar – Tsunami and Disaster Mitigation Research Center (TDMRC) USK, Dr. Ir. Abdi Jihad – Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Geophysical station, Aceh Besar, Dr. Marina C. G. Frederik – National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Haekal Azief Haridh, Ph.D – PRKP USK and Dr. Mattie Rodrigue- Science Program Director, OceanX.

The event, a testament to the collaborative efforts of USK, BMKG, BRIN, and OCEANX, was supported by the Ministry of Maritime and Investment Coordination. The opening remarks were delivered by the Head of USK’s Research and Community Service Institute (LPPM), Prof. Dr. Mudatsir, M.kes, who underscored the need to enhance and expand the collaboration between these organizations to foster a disaster-prepared environment.

This guest lecture was moderated by Sri Agustina, S.Si., M.S from the USK Marine and Fisheries Research Center (PRKP). Prof. Muksin, the first speaker to fill and convey the role of TDMRC USK for the community, said, “Until now, there is no sophisticated technology that can predict when a disaster will come, so we must understand the steps of disaster prevention and mitigation.”

Meanwhile, Dr. Abdi Jihad, a representative of the government, conveyed the role of BMKG in Tsunami Mitigation, especially in Aceh today. “BMKG continues to strive to make a direct contribution to the community. Usually, BMKG always waits for schools or campus parties to visit BMKG. Still, currently, there is a program, namely ‘BMKG goes to School,’ where BMKG directly visits and provides counseling on disaster knowledge and is committed to early disaster preparedness.”

Furthermore, three other speakers provided knowledge about the diversity of biodiversity they got while sailing on the OceanX ship. This research ship started a series of research expeditions in Indonesia. Dr. Marina C. G. Frederik, a researcher from BRIN, provided material on the earthquake situation in the Indonesian region along with the community’s response, which was realized through the existence of 10 villages in Indonesia that have been certified Tsunami Ready (TR), where these villages are prepared to build communities that have resilience and readiness in facing Tsunami disasters.

Dr. Mattie Rodrigue, the Director of the science program at OceanX, provided a comprehensive overview of OceanX, its facilities, and its vision to create a global community of explorers and scientists dedicated to educating, inspiring and protecting the ocean to drive positive change. Haekal Azief Haridhi, Ph.D, shared his unique experiences and discoveries during the 21-day expedition with OceanX, including the fascinating discovery of gas reserves in the northern waters of Aceh and previously unrecorded biodiversity. These insights added significant value to the event and its participants.
