BNPB Coordinates with TDMRC to Commemorate 20 Years of the Aceh Tsunami

Provincial authorities in Aceh will host the Commemoration of Disaster Risk Reduction Month (PRB) 2024, marking the 20th anniversary of the devastating 2004 Aceh tsunami. The event, scheduled to take place from October 10 – 13 in Banda Aceh, will feature a series of activities reflecting on the progress made in disaster mitigation efforts since the tragedy.

During this visit, BNPB and TDMRC may discuss ways to improve disaster preparedness, commemorate the tragic Aceh tsunami and draw lessons from the experience to improve future disaster management systems. They may also discuss ways to raise public awareness about disaster risks and the importance of good preparation.

Among the key events planned is a National Seminar and Sharing Discussion focusing on the achievements, challenges, and mitigation efforts undertaken in the aftermath of the 2004 Aceh tsunami. Recognizing the significance of the occasion, the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has called for support from the Tsunami and Disaster Mitigation Research Center (TDMRC) to ensure the success of the event.

Prof. Syamsidik, Director of TDMRC, has outlined several activities planned to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the tsunami. Dr. Syaumi Syahreza, Deputy Chair of the 20th Tsunami Anniversary Coordination Committee, expressed hopes for the smooth execution of the event, emphasizing its potential benefits not only for the people of Aceh but also for the broader Indonesian community.

Cooperation between BNPB and TDMRC in this context could be crucial in ensuring that the 20th anniversary of the Aceh tsunami is not only a moment of remembrance, but also an opportunity to take concrete steps to strengthen disaster resilience and preparedness in Aceh and surrounding areas.
