The 25th TDMRC’s Seminar Series

Banda Aceh – The 25th TDMRC’s seminar with theme ““Environmental Management and Adaptation Strategies to Climate Change from the Perspective of Local Knowledge on Disasters and Regional Zoning” has been held online through zoom meetings and offline which is located on the 3rd floor auditorium of TDMRC Universitas Syiah Kuala. This seminar was organized by the Tsunami and Disaster Mitigation Research Center (TDMRC) to Commemorating 27th Years of National Technology Awakening Day (HAKTEKNAS). This hybrid seminar activity invited several panelists, namely:

  • Lisa Hiwasaki from the University of Rhode Island, USA
  • Steve Dery from Laval University, Canada
  • Farhan Muhammad Uzair, B.HSc., MA from Balai Arsip Statis dan Tsunami (BAST)
  • Rina Suryani Oktari from the graduate school for Disaster Science, USK
  • Nur Fadli from the Faculty of Marine and Fisheries, USK
  • Prof. Anawat Suppasri from IRIDeS, Tohoku University, Japan

And also led by moderator:

  • Rizanna Rosemary, Ph.D from the TDMRC, USK
  • Alfi Rahman, Ph.D from the TDMRC, USK

With the emerging and immediate need to adapt to this change while reducing its effect on the lives of a nation, an adaptive strategy needs to be considered. Today, Prof. Hiwasaki from the University of Rhode Island, USA, Dr. Oktari, USK, and Mr. Farhan, BAST will share their thought on this problem. Especially, they will introduce the local knowledge which integrates into the adaptation to climate change. It is an interesting topic, as we are aware that there are not too many written records of the local knowledge especially related to climate change adaptation.

Here, for accompanying the process, the seminar established Tsunami and Disaster Mitigation Research Center (TDMRC) in 2006. With this, the seminar aim to contribute back to the world after the massive reconstruction and rehabilitation process following the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami. With TDMRC in place, the seminar also would like to strengthen regional resilience toward disasters by providing sufficient scientific and technological based evidence. TDMRC is one of the centers of Excellence that we have at USK, and on this occasion, the seminar also commemorate the 27th year of Hari Kebangkitan Teknologi Nasional (Hakteknas), or National Technology Awakening Day.
