Learning About Weather Up Close: TDMRC IN-SAINTEK 2026 Disaster Science Camp Participants Visit BMKG

Banda Aceh, 30 September 2026 – Thirty students from across Aceh visited two facilities of Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) as part of the Disaster Science Camp (DSC) 2026 under the TDMRC IN-SAINTEK 2026 program. The educational visits gave participants the opportunity to learn firsthand about weather observation through instrument demonstrations and presentations by BMKG staff.

The first visit took place at the BMKG Climatology Station in Indrapuri, Aceh Besar. Participants explored the station’s instrument garden, where staff introduced the equipment used to monitor atmospheric and weather conditions.

During the tour, BMKG staff explained how instruments measure wind direction and speed, air temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, and rainfall. Students also learned how observations produce data that help describe weather conditions.

The visit included a session on the importance of weather information in everyday life. Staff introduced the observation process and explained how weather information supports preparedness for hydrometeorological hazards.

Later that day, participants continued to the BMKG Meteorology Station in Blang Bintang. At this facility, they received further explanations about meteorology, weather monitoring, and weather information services.

The visits offered a practical introduction to disaster science. Seeing the instruments and facilities firsthand helped students connect the learning materials with the processes used to observe and understand weather.

Through this activity, DSC 2026 aimed to broaden participants’ knowledge of weather and meteorology while strengthening their awareness of the role of weather information in disaster preparedness. As part of TDMRC IN-SAINTEK 2026, the camp brought disaster science closer to students through direct learning experiences.
