TDMRC-USK Research Staff Selected for International Probabilistic Tsunami Risk Analysis Workshop in Potsdam, Germany 2026

Participants engage in a group discussion and hands-on training session during the Workshop on Probabilistic Tsunami and Risk Analysis (PTRA), exploring methods for tsunami hazard, exposure, vulnerability, and risk assessment.

Potsdam, 01-04 June 2026 – Research staff member at the Tsunami and Disaster Mitigation Research Center (TDMRC), Universitas Syiah Kuala (USK), Aulia Khalqillah, S.Si., M.Si., was selected and granted as one of 24 participants from various countries and research backgrounds to attend the on-site Workshop on Probabilistic Tsunami and Risk Analysis (PTRA). The workshop was funded by the Geo-INQUIRE project with contributions and support from EPOS TCS Tsunami and was held from 1–4 June 2026 at the GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences in Potsdam, Germany. His participation was also supported by TDMRC-USK.

The workshop provided an intensive and well-balanced combination of fundamental theoretical concepts and hands-on practical training covering the four main components of the PTRA framework: hazard, exposure, vulnerability, and risk. Participants learned how to utilize exposure data from open global dynamic exposure databases and global population datasets, as well as how to develop fragility and vulnerability models using Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulations. In addition, the workshop highlighted two major approaches to PTRA: convolution-based and simulation-based analyses, both of which can be applied to building and population exposure assessments.

As a young scientist and early-career researcher in hazard and risk science, Aulia considered the workshop a valuable opportunity to strengthen his expertise in disaster risk analysis. The knowledge gained will support the evaluation and estimation of potential damage and losses to buildings, infrastructure, and populations resulting from cascading earthquake–tsunami hazards. Such analyses play an important role in supporting national, regional, and local governments in making informed decisions on disaster risk management, particularly in Indonesia and Banda Aceh, where earthquake and tsunami hazards remain significant concerns.

Beyond the technical and scientific training, the workshop also provided an opportunity to build professional networks with researchers from diverse disciplines, institutions, and countries. These connections may serve as a foundation for future international research collaborations in the field of disaster risk and resilience.
