Banda Aceh — Tsunami and Disaster Mitigation Research Center (TDMRC) of Universitas Syiah Kuala (USK), through its Health Crisis Pandemic and Community Preparedness division, convened the 37th Seminar Series under the theme “Basic Life Support (BLS) Training: Everyone Can Save a Life.” The event was held at the Dr. Ir. M. Ridha Auditorium on Friday, 21 November 2025 and was attended by internal staff from both TDMRC and USK.

Prof. Dr. Syamsidik, S.T., M.Sc
The seminar was officially inaugurated by the Director of TDMRC USK, Prof. Dr. Syamsidik, S.T., M.Sc. In his opening remarks, he underscored that preparedness and early emergency response capacity are important not only within the university environment but also in everyday settings, particularly within families and the wider community, so that individuals can provide timely and appropriate assistance to those around them in medical emergency situations
This training was organized in response to the critical need for immediate assistance during the first minutes of life-threatening events such as respiratory arrest or cardiac arrest. Prompt and appropriate action prior to the arrival of professional medical services can be decisive for patient survival. Therefore, the program was designed to enhance the foundational knowledge and practical first-aid competencies of non-medical staff across USK.

The Seminar Series featured core theoretical sessions and hands-on practice delivered by qualified instructors, including:
-
Basic Life Support (BLS) and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
Delivered by Dr. dr. Ichsan, M.Sc., SpKKLP., Subsp.FOMC. This session covered fundamental BLS/CPR concepts as life-saving interventions for cardiac and respiratory arrest, including initial victim assessment, chest compressions, and rescue breathing in accordance with standard first-aid procedures. -
Airway Management
Presented by Dr. Ns. Budi Satria, S.Kep., MNS. The lecture emphasized recognition and management of airway obstruction, identification of choking warning signs, and techniques for assisting conscious and unconscious choking victims, with adaptations for special populations. -
Circulatory System Management and Shock
Delivered by Ns. Rachmalia, S.Kep., MNS. This session addressed circulation disorders, types of shock that may occur in field settings, associated clinical signs and symptoms, and safe principles of initial management prior to advanced medical care. -
Practical Training in First-Aid Procedures
The simulation and practical component was facilitated by dr. RM. Agung Pranata Kusuma Atmaja, M.Biomed and Dr. Ns. Budi Satria, S.Kep., MNS. Participants conducted guided practice following the airway–breathing–circulation (ABC) sequence, including choking management, CPR procedures, and early response to shock or injury.
Through the 37th Seminar Series, TDMRC USK reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the capacity of the university community, particularly internal staff, to become more responsive, skilled, and confident in delivering safe and appropriate first aid during medical emergencies. In line with the seminar’s message, “Everyone Can Save a Life,” the program highlights that any individual can serve as a first responder and contribute meaningfully to saving lives.
