Documentary Short Film Crew
BANDA ACEH – The Tsunami and Disaster Mitigation Research Center (TDMRC) at Universitas Syiah Kuala (USK), in collaboration with the TDMRC Multimedia Production team, has successfully produced an educational film titled “Risalah Ombak Serambi Mekkah” to mark the 20th anniversary of the Aceh Tsunami. This documentary was meticulously guided by Prof. Dr. Syamsidik, S.T., M.Sc., Director of TDMRC at USK. The tsunami devastated Aceh on December 26, 2004, and this film reflects on that disaster.
The film premiered at the AAC Dayan Dawood Main Hall USK during the Aceh International Workshop and Expo on Sustainable Tsunami-Disaster Recovery (AIWEST-DR) and the 20th reflection on the Aceh Earthquake and Tsunami.
“The concept of “Risalah Ombak Serambi Mekkah” began in December 2023 and was solidified by February 2024,” shared Naufal Muhammad Naufal Al Ghiffari, the film’s director.

Naufal emphasized that the documentary aims to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Aceh Tsunami and to convey the impact it has had on the cultural, social, and religious aspects of the lives of the Acehnese people.
“Just as our ancestors conveyed their experiences through manuscripts, poems, and songs, we aspire for this film to carry forward this tradition for the current generation,” he added.
The documentary includes insights from various experts:

– Tarmizi A. Hamid: Cultural Figure, Director of the Rumoh Aceh Manuscript Museum.

“Hopefully, this documentary serves as a reflection on Aceh’s disaster history and promotes an educational message on disaster preparedness,” concluded Naufal.
