BACKGROUND

International Seminar on Tsunami Disaster Mitigation 2024

Tsunami mitigation is an essential effort in reducing the impact of this natural disaster. Tsunamis are natural phenomena that cannot be prevented, but their impact can be minimized through a systematic and planned approach. The 2004 Aceh tsunami was one of the most devastating disasters in history, claiming hundreds of thousands of lives and causing enormous material losses. The event became a turning point in disaster management in Indonesia, prompting the birth of various regulations and policies aimed at improving tsunami preparedness and mitigation in all disaster-prone areas.

To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Aceh tsunami, various activities have been planned to raise public awareness and strengthen existing mitigation systems. One important activity is an international seminar on tsunami disaster mitigation, which aims to share knowledge and experiences from various countries as well as from various groups such as academics and practitioners in handling tsunami disasters. This event also served as a platform to evaluate the effectiveness of existing regulations and identify the need for new regulations that can be more effective in reducing the risk of tsunami disasters in the future.

Through this forum, it is hoped that recommendations will be made that can be implemented in real terms and have a significant impact on improving community preparedness. Tsunami disaster mitigation regulations play a key role in efforts to prevent and manage tsunami impacts. Recommendations resulting from various studies and discussions in the international seminar are expected to answer this challenge. Effective implementation of regulations will ensure that communities and governments have clear guidance in dealing with potential disasters, while minimizing the risks that arise. With comprehensive and integrated regulations, tsunami disaster mitigation is expected to run more optimally, reducing the number of casualties and material losses incurred.

OBJECTIVES

The objectives of the 2024 International Tsunami Mitigation Seminar include:

To bring together experts from academia, practitioners, and government to exchange ideas and understandings about the latest information, from technical aspects to regulations, for tsunami disaster mitigation recommendations.
To evaluate tsunami mitigation strategies, identify tsunami sources, and assess community preparedness and government capacity regarding tsunami mitigation strategies.
