Banda Aceh – The Tsunami and Disaster Mitigation Research Center (TDMRC) of Universitas Syiah Kuala (USK) successfully hosted the 33rd Seminar Series on Monday, December 9, 2024 at the TDMRC Auditorium. The seminar, titled “The Role of Young Generation in Communicating Disaster Resilience,” marked a significant milestone in the commemoration of 20 Years since the 2004 Aceh Tsunami.
The event attracted participants from diverse backgrounds, including students, academics, disaster practitioners, and community leaders, all of whom emphasized the crucial role of youth in shaping disaster preparedness and response strategies.
The seminar featured insightful presentations by two esteemed speakers:
- Dr. Masrizal, MA, a Sociology of Communication Academician, who shared his expertise on the importance of clear and effective communication in disaster mitigation.
- Teuku Rizza Mully, Initiator of the Aceh Creative Forum, who inspired the audience with examples of youth-led initiatives and creative approaches to building disaster resilience.
The discussion was skillfully moderated by Nurmala Hayati, M.Si, Ph.D, who emphasized the need for collaboration and innovation to engage younger generations in disaster communication efforts.
One of the highlights of the event was the Gala Premiere of the film “Akan Ada Jalan”, which received an overwhelmingly positive response from attendees. The film, showcasing powerful stories of survival, resilience, and hope, underscored the importance of remembering past disasters while preparing for future ones.

In her closing remarks, Dr. Nurmala Hayati stated, “This seminar reminds us that the younger generation holds the power to transform how we communicate and prepare for disasters. Through education, innovation, and creativity, they can become the torchbearers of a more resilient future.”
The 33rd Seminar Series not only served as a reflective moment to honor the victims of the 2004 Aceh Tsunami but also as a platform to empower youth in becoming active agents of change in disaster mitigation and resilience efforts.
